Lava that's on the cooler side comes out of volcanoes at only pizza oven-like temperatures of 570 F, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). In the middle range of lava temperatures, the dark red lava often seen slowly crawling across parts of Hawaii, measures around 895 F. Bright red lava flows in Hawaii can get as hot as 1,165 F, with the glowing orange flows getting hotter than 1,600 F.

IntroductionCreating satellite imagery is quite easy and really a lot of fun. You can see the world in a completely different way. Not to mention, some of those images make for a great desktop background! :)In this tutorial, we're going to focus on imagery from Landsat 8, a NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) and USGS (United States Geological Survey) satellite. However, this can easily apply to older versions of Landsat data (Landsat 7 and earlier). What is Landsat 8?La...

Standing at the edge of Halemaumau Crater in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on Hawaii Island, Hawaii. I was able to legally access the edge of Halemaumau crater while volunteering for the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. I cautiously hiked through a restricted area of the park with a fellow United States Geological Survey geologist with a camera, tripod, and respirator to filter hazardous gasses.
