Here is an example of a concrete overlay applied to a normal concrete patio. We stained it with Onyx water based stain and sealed it with a gloss sealer that has a 8-10 year lifespan. I like this look because it takes on the look of actual slate.

My $15 thrift store pine coffee table, chalk painted and lightly glazed. For the top, I first tried to stain it using a vinegar/steel wool stain, but it came out blotchy and not to my liking. So I changed course and dry brushed several layers of thinned off white chalk paint. Glazed it again lightly, then applied two coats of water based poly finish. Now it looks a lot like driftwood.
