From the President’s Kitchen Table of Les Femmes Dear Readers, Springtime gardening always inspires me to think about the faith. It’s appropriate isn’t it, especially during the Easter Season when Mary Magdalene mistook Jesus for the gardener of Gethsemane? And what an image that is! Jesus is the New Adam who brings new life. Saint Mary Magdalene the most misinterpreted disciple of Jesus. First of all, she was never a Magdalene, in fact she came from the village of Magdala, Mary of Magdala not Mary Magdalene as we know her. She is holy as the other apostles.
Mary Magdalene: Jesus had cast out 7 demons from her and she became one of His most devoted followers, among a group of women who cared for the disciples. Jesus said of her: "Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little."-LK 7:47 KJV
Beautiful painting ! Maria Magdalena, a woman who was mistakenly judged and to this day is mistakenly believed to be someone she is not, however she was one of the only people who stood by the side of someone she cared for through as he was being persecuted and thereafter.
Mary Magdalene, 1445, Rogier van der Weyden (1399/1400 – 1464). Left panel of his Crucifixion triptych. Mary is holding her usual attribute, a jar of ointment. This attribute may be the result of a case of mistaken identities, i.e. the assumption that Mary Magdalene is the Mary who anointed Jesus’ feet. According to John this was a different Mary altogether: Mary of Bethany.
