First Flight - The world changed at 10:35 AM, on December 17, 1903 on the north side of Kill Devil Hills, Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. It was at that moment that the Wright Brother’s "Wright Flyer", with Orville Wright at the controls, lifted off in sustained, controlled flight.
December 17, 1903: Orville Wright pilots the Wright Flyer in the first successful flight of a powered heavier-than-air flying machine at Kitty Hawk, NC. This first flight lasted 12 seconds and covered 36 m (120 ft). Wilbur Wright is pictured at right.
