Yakov Dzhugashvili, Stalin’s elder son (standing between the German officers) was taken POW on July 16, 1941. Stalin was furious and disowned Yakov the minute his capture was communicated to Moscow. Sent to the Sachsenhausen concentration camp, Yakov was shot dead by a guard when he allegedly refused to obey orders on April 14, 1943. Stalin didn't want a potential threat, like a military son, to come home to the USSR.
