Blechnum 'silver lady'
A fast-growing, understory fern with multiple dark green fronds. Grows to 1 m in height in full shade and can tolerate high humidity and heavy rainfall in coastal areas. Will work in either sandy or clay soils. I like to mass plant under tree canopies to create dense green under foliage.
Banksia spinulosa and Casuarina green wave
Banksia spinulosa is a large, hardy shrub that grows between 1-3 m in height in well-drained soil, either sandy or clay. Will thrive in either full sun or partial shade. The lime green foliage is a great contrast to dark green hues within your garden. Orange/yellow flower spikes are often seen throughout the year.
Banksia integrifolia ‘roller coaster’
A dense, cascading ground cover/small shrub that thrives in sandy and windy coastal conditions. It spreads between 3-4 m in diameter and works in full sun in either sandy or clay soil with moderate drainage. I use ‘roller coaster’ to cover banks and retaining walls or anywhere that requires erosion control.

Alpinia caerulea 'atherton'
A shade-loving perennial with dark green and red variegated foliage. This popular bush tucker plant can grow to a height of 2 m and works well in either sandy or clay soil that is well-drained. The ginger root can be harvested after one year of growth and used in cooking as a mild alternative to common ginger.
Archontophoenix alexandrae
A tall palm with a slender silver trunk and bright green fronds. Establishes quickly (to a height of 30 m) and thrives in either sandy or clay soil and either full sun or partial shade. The Bangalow palm is perfect for coastal gardens as they grow well in high humidity and rainfall yet can also tolerate periods of dry weather.
Alocassia brisbanensis
A large-leafed perennial with glossy green foliage. Grows incredibly fast (to a height of 1.5 m) so can be purchased in a smaller pot size. Thrives in either full shade or partial shade, sheltered from the wind. The leaves however are poisonous to dogs and cats and mildly toxic to humans.
Tuckeroo tree
A compact tree that grows in a rounded shape up to 8m in height. Plant in full sun or partial shade in well-drained soil. Perfect to use as a screening tree as the leaves are broad and dense with a beautiful dark green hue. The roots are also non-invasive making them a great choice for residential blocks.
