The Launceston and Western Railway (to Deloraine) was opened in 1871. The largest structure was the iron bridge spanning the South Esk River at Longford (costing 28 000 pounds). It along with the substantial brick viaduct was used for an emergency access to Longford during times of major floods until the new Illawarra Highway was put in place, and remains in service for the railway today.
