Eco-cultural. Marika Alderton House: This house opens up on both ends like the bark lean to, traditional shelters of the indigenous.  Cross ventilation is important in this climate.  There are openings at the ground level too, the inhabitants like to sit on the floor, allowing them a view and air from that level.  The space is open and multiuse, allowing for the social interaction that is so important to this culture.

Eco-social. Kunst Haus Wien, Vienna, Austria, Hundertwasser (1991): He's the artist who wrote the "Your window right — your tree duty" manifesto. He was committed to architecture in harmony with nature.  Note the tree tennants and green roof on this building.  He rejected functionalism, machines and straight lines.

Eco-medical. ING bank building, SE Amsterdam, The Netherlands, Ton Alberts (1987): Can a building make you healthy?  This is an attempt.  This is a collection of 10 buildings in an S shaped configuration, a continuous circulation runs through them.  There are openings with courtyards and views from every room.  Natural light is a big driver in the design.

Eco-technic. Commerzbank Tower: It's not just token house plants in the sky gardens, trees grow here too.  Built in 1997, it is touted as the world's first ecological office tower.  It uses technologies to reduce it's need for power consumption.  It's design creates small village like pockets centred around the skygardens, growing small ecologies.
