Sewing Tips: How To Sew EPP Hexagons by Hand
English paper piecing is a technique used to create various quilting projects. It is done by hand, using paper templates to stabilize scraps of fabric. This technique can be used to sew scraps of different shapes, but hexagons are the most popular and, of course, my favorite ;-) There are several ways to secure paper templates and sew hexagons together, this is how I do mine. Right now, I am showing you how to make a homemade view finder. Acrylics are great but if it's not a shape that you're going to use a lot, grab some card stock. Use the cardstock that you got to English paper piece with and then put that on top and trace it out with a ruler and it works perfectly fine and once you find your fussy cut spots, then, you can cut it out or you can draw it like here. Draw it out if you want to cut it with scissors. This is next level fussy cutting. I am centering it on this cross. It's a lighter fabric and now I am gluing it so it is perfectly centered on that hexagram. It is just a next level type of tip that I have for you. And now look at the boy walking. I do love me some thread loss. I like to double thread in my thread when I hand sew. I use Wonder deco ball. So, these are hexis that I aligned in columns. I know some people like to make the flowers where there's one center hexagon and then six around. I prefer this especially if I'm working in a smaller area for a pillow. It just seems easier for me to handle but for real, try everything. I'm whip stitching here. I just keep going. Whip stitching is like the spiral of a notebook. You go in the same direction. Open and enter in the same direction. Now, I heat set all of that glue basting with a little bit of moisture which makes it a lot easier to remove. See oh this is such a fun part of it. I like the heat setting it and and steam because then I get to reuse the cardstock over and over again. If I don't do that sometimes it tears. So if that's not an issue for you then this is a nothing burger. Now I'm going to applique this on of an existing piece of fabric and then quilt it. Right now I have the cross point. I like to do that just to make everything center. Now I'm using Roxanne's glue based it. Just a little. is all it takes. It's a temporary fix. Heat set that put it in place. After that I am going to do the other half. Just little dots all the way around. All the way around. Heat setting it as critical when glue basting. Because then it hardens and you will eliminate the chance of gunking up your which is everyone's top concern. Now, I am edge stitching this. I vary from an edge stitch or blanket stitch whenever I do this kind of applique but I know how I'm going to quilt it. So, this is exactly what I needed and now, just so that there's not extra bulk. I'm going to cut out the back section. Then, I have some scraps that I can use for fussy cutting in English paper piecing later but this makes all of it even so when you quilt the whole thing, it's going to look amazing.
