Diving the SS Yongala on the Great Barrier Reef
Yongala is a unique site not just for its history and its heritage, but because it has created a wonderful oasis for marine life, which means that it's become one of Australia's most popular and famous dive sites as well.
Meet the Salt Water STEMinists
According to the UN, women only account for 30% of the world’s researchers. We’ve met countless incredible women absolutely killing it in their field, and we’ve heard their amazing stories first hand. We reckon it’s time the rest of the world did too. Salt Water STEMinists is an ongoing video series that amplifies the voices of female researchers by sharing the stories behind their tireless work in marine science and conservation. #STEM #WomeninStem
Diving the SS Yongala Shipwreck on the Great Barrier Reef
In 1911 the SS Yongala left Mackay, Queensland, and disappeared with 122 people on board - never to be seen again. No one was ever found, until the late 1950s when divers investigated a potential shipwreck site and finally found the Yongala. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Fast forward 100 years, and the coral-encrusted wreck has become a wonderful oasis for marine life, which means that it's now one of Australia's most popular and famous dive sites. Learn more in our film about the wreck.
Dr Kate Quigley is the queen of the super corals. 👑
Kate’s research focuses on investigating heat tolerance in the building blocks of the Reef. By cross-breeding corals from different parts of the Reef, Kate and her team at the Australian Institute of Marine Science are discovering that it is possible to breed strains of coral that are more resilient to warming ocean temperatures. Learn all about Kate's work in her Salt Water STEMinists film. #Marinescience #STEM #WomeninSTEM
how these tour operators are replanting the Whitsunday's coral reefs
The tourism industry was one of the hardest hit by COVID-19, with most boats unable to operate and tour guides stood down. Reef Ecologic saw this as an opportunity to engage the local community with the work happening in their blue backyard. Over 20 tour guides from Red Cat Adventures, Ocean Rafting and Daydream Island have become citizen scientists for the day, working with the team from Reef Ecologic to survey fish life and plant coral.

Bleached anemone in the Great Barrier Reef
Climate change is a behemoth issue, and to combat its impacts on coral reefs, we need to tackle the problem in multiple ways. First and foremost, we need to reduce our carbon footprint, and the team is realistic about coral restoration’s role in climate action.
