Aviators - Charles Kingsford Smith
Sir Charles Edward Kingsford Smith - Smithy - was an early Australian aviator. Among many achievements, he and Charles Ulm made the first non-stop crossing of the Australian mainland, the first flights between Australia and New Zealand, the first flight from the USA to Australia in 1928 and a record England-Australia flight. Attempting to break the England-Australia speed record with co-pilot Tommy Pethybridge, they disappeared between India and Singapore on 8 November 1935 never to be found.
