Olympic Games - 1956 Melbourne

The 1956 Olympics, the XVI Olympiad, were held in Melbourne, Australia. Equestrian events were held five months before in Stockholm due to quarantine regulations. These were the first to be staged in the Southern Hemisphere and the first to be held outside Europe or North America. Melbourne was selected as host city in 1949 over Buenos Aires, Mexico City, Montreal and six American cities. IOC President Avery Brundage was concerned that preparations were slow but they were the Friendly Games
José ("Chegüi") Torres (May 3, 1936 – January 19, 2009), was a Puerto Rican professional boxer. As an amateur boxer, he won a silver medal in the junior middleweight at the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne. In 1965, he defeated Willie Pastrano to win the WBC and WBA light heavyweight championships. In 1997, he was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
