Charcoal is my selected tool to create my drawing and it's marks. I chose this tool because of all the specific techniques you can use to create different marks. Knowing techniques to do with charcoal and how to work with it became necessary in order to produce the drawing. By learning techniques like smudging and carving using an eraser and building on top of charcoal I will be able to fulfil my design as effective as possible.

My main tool to create this piece will be charcoal which is (for me) a black/grey. That means I will be drawing in values as opposed to colour. As this is the case, knowing the techniques to create values is necessary. This technique is what is going to create the division of each aspect of the piece to give it a slightly more realistic look. This technique will also aid in creating a 3D feel and create the depth I want in my design by using variations of the greys.

Knowing the different erasers you can use (as well as their different advantages) will definitely aid in the creation of the piece and design. This is because of my choice of marker-maker being charcoal. Also, sketching underneath the charcoal as a form of planning also requires a good eraser. Having good erasers to rub out charcoal as well as sketching makes this piece of equipment important to fulfil the design brief.

A pencil is (obviously) a major piece of equipment needed in the planning process of creating the drawing. As my final product will be made using charcoal, pencils are just for planning (which is still as important in a successful drawing). Knowing the different types of pencils as well as what each one does is necessary in creating a successful drawing. Techniques specifically for pencils is another aspect that will go into create a drawing that fits the design briefs set.

Having a focal point in your composition that stands out is a technique you can use to send a clearer message. With my drawing I will be having my focal point (the figures) walking in an environment. This means it can easily take away from the focal point. Prioritising this when composing my drawing will help fulfil the design brief set as the message will read clear to the audience.

This figure drawing technique is a part of this collection as within my piece it features two people with their bodies (almost) fully viewed. As part of my design the people are the focal point of the drawing. Because of this point, the figures have to look identifiable. This technique on how to approach figures assures I can fulfil that.

More specific charcoal techniques will aid in how well I can create my depiction with charcoal. Using different texture techniques with using charcoal will need to come into the play. This is because as part of my design I want to have a degree of realism to it. Using these different techniques will help me achieve that.

This perspective technique is a part of my collection as it is a technique that will be showcased within the piece. Perspective is what I will be using to create depth in the piece. In order to build the environment the figures are in and the actions to make sense (walking down a path) I will need perspective. This guide helps fulfil my design as it is what will create the sense that the figures are walking down a path that leads off to somewhere.

As my piece is going to be set in an outside environment there will be inevitable light sources in the piece. Learning the techniques in shading something correctly is another thing that is needed to create a successful drawing. As part of my design I want to have a sum of realism in it and therefore need proper shading techniques. Using these techniques that can be achieved.

As my piece features figures, in public, materials of clothing will be a part of the drawing. Knowing how material falls and the gravity in the different materials is a technique that will help toward my design. By knowing this technique and using it I will be able to add that realism I want. This technique will be one that helps bring my figures to life like my design wants.

Charcoal sticks, compressed charcoal sticks, charcoal pencils amongst other things are a list of equipment I will be using during the process of creating my piece. Each piece of equipment has it's own use that will add to the piece. My design requires a lot of charcoal-specific technique and knowing the different types of equipment to use them on will help with my drawing being successful. As well as successful, it will also help fulfil the design brief for the piece.

This technique will be my main charcoal-specific technique. This is due to the fact that my piece requires a lot of smudging to represent the fading of the girl. My design was to create a girl with the feeling lost and losing yourself and this technique will be one that will aid in creating that. With this technique I will be able to complete the piece with success as it will help fulfil the design briefs set for the piece.

For my piece I want to take a minimalistic approach in order to keep the focus on the girl without anything else distracting it. Using this technique will create not only the focal point, but represent the loneliness and emptiness of the emotion. This will one aspect of the drawing that will build to create a successful piece. This technique will be my main one to fulfil the design by keeping everything simplistic.

All these pieces of equipment are used to smudge and blend things traditionally. This equipment with help bring my piece to life because of this. Charcoal is usually used for blending and having these tools will make nice transitions between values. Using these tools (as you can see) will all go into making my piece as close to the design as possible.

A suggestion for the assignment is to include a caption to explain the concept. Because of this I want to use lettering as a way to achieve a caption while working it into my drawing. Having the words flowing with the fading parts of the girl is the image I plan to create with this technique. My design rests heavily on the "fading" part of the drawing so having the title of the image within that seems to be the perfect place to use this technique

My piece will feature an aspect to do with the wind. Using this to have that flow in the piece is something that I will need. Using strong, smooth and confident lines is the technique. As part of my design I wanted to display the movement in the piece and using this gesture line technique I will be able to achieve that.
