It is a city of peaceful suburbs shaded by tropical palms and gardens, with gorgeous sunsets and so much to see and do even before you set out for Kakadu and Litchfield National Parks. The Northern Territory was founded in 1911 (excised from South Australia). Indigenous Australians had extensive seasonal trade links with the peoples of Indonesia. During WW II, most of the Top End was placed under military government. The Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act 1976 was eventually passed by the Fraser Government in 1976 and began operation on the following Australia Day.
