Whilst there was no brief, I wanted the garden to have a seamless connection to the outdoors.  The living area opens across the corners, as well as on the north side.  The polished concrete floors, mud-brick walls, unfinished steel and glass windows, and corten steel and timber finishes called for a similarly unfussy approach to the garden.  I wanted to create something quite natural, using a mix of exotic and native plants.  The garden’s structure is deceptive; it looks casual and easy and…

The brief for this project was to make the entry garden for this home into a more inviting space, moving people from either the front entry gate or the access to the garage, to the front door of the home.   Using a mixture of native exotics a modern take on an English border garden was created. The two story blue house set the inspiration for the plant choices, with the haunting gnarled Birch either side of the path leading to the front door, giving the house scale and anchoring it into…

A dense, dark green screen forms a protective back drop to this courtyard of spheres, large blue stone stepping stones all looking sculptural by a base of decomposed granite.  Three Olive trees cast an evergreen filtered show from above while Frangipanis in pots connect this garden to its coastline location.  The hedge on the perimeter stops either side of a wet feature wall and pond, drawing the perspective and encouraging the eye to glimpse to the view on the world outside.

Finally! Already have my snow-in-summer and lamb's ear mounds. Just need some boxwood and rosemary to alternate with to give it a little more color variation.

There are no flowers here, and these colors are always on display. The soft golden foliage of Thuja occ. 'Rheingold' looks great against the blue fescue grass. Other colors are contributed by Azalea 'Silver Sword', Calluna v. 'Boscoop', The Blue Star Juniper, Pieris jap. 'Variegata', and Pinus strobus 'Compacta'. Very little pruning, if any has been done here, and the maintenance is minimal.
