The old sleepers that need replacing are part of the public owned asset that the tourism operator leases. Ida Bay Railway has to pay the lease costs to the Government, plus has to pay for purchase and installation of the sleepers. These new sleepers then become public property at no cost to the public. The railway attracts visitors to linger longer in the area. Ida Bay Railway adds to the critical mass reason for Tasmanians and visitors to go south from Hobart and enjoy a Huon Valley Escape.
