Compare these two pics! 🧐 I base most of my design decisions on old interior photos - none of it is guess work. The second pic is of a London lower middle class bedroom from the 1900s. You’ll see the linoleum, dressing table set up, sparser pictures with the same hooks and the similar pelmet which I’ve used on my bedroom fireplace are all inspired by this rare old pic. Check out my Pinterest account (also called Mr Victorian!) which has hundreds of pics like this and loads of pics of old…

Samantha Amaranth did everything she could to feel a rush. She jumped off of cliffs and she drank until the world spun. They called her crazy and threw her into a mental institution. She was referred to a brilliant psychiatrist, Dr. Hannibal Lecter. The only one who could help her. Little did they both know, Samantha would pull the most dangerous stunt yet, falling in love with a cannibal. If you were a guest at the Davenport in the early 1900s, you would have been greeted by songbirds in the lobby. This photo from 1925 shows some of the birdcages—filled with lovebirds, songbirds, and numerous tropical birds—that adorned the lobby and welcomed guests upon their arrival. 🦜 #ThrowbackThursday

According to this article from Ladies' Home Journal magazine in April 1912, "the first requirement of a living room is to give a feeling of cheerfulness and hospitality." I certainly love the glass doors that open to the fresh air and the the whole room seems to me to look much lighter than typical rooms of the day. This article also featured ideas for the bedroom and dining room, so in the next few entries I'll be continuing with those.
