House of the Oba, Benin City, Nigeria The compound had a series of slots in the mud walls used as shrines; this contained mainly pots. [Photographer was] sure if the was the only house of the Oba, I've seen images from the 1970's of a similar buidling but with many more artifacts. 'Oba' means king of the people, the Edo people of eastern south central Nigeria, centred around Benin City.
