The camera lucida was introduced by William Hyde Wollaston in 1807. In spite of the name it is not a room/chamber/box at all but a prism device that enables the user to see the object and the drawing paper superimposed. It has been used in several different forms since the early 19th century to aid drawing by artists and users of microscopes.
