First discovered by French explorers in the mid-1500s, the area of 1000 Islands is a place of unparalleled beauty. Starting where Lake Ontario becomes the source of the St. Lawrence River, an archipelago of 1864 scenic islands stretches over 80 kilometers and is shared by Canada and the US. Most of these islands are part of the Great Canadian Shield, and in 2002, the area was designated by UNESCO as a World Biosphere Reserve.
