It was the lowland seat of the earls and dukes of Argyll, chiefs of Clan Campbell, from the 15th to the 19th century, and was visited by Mary, Queen of Scots, in the 16th century. The Clan Campbell Tartan is an extremely popular and easily recognisable tartan all around the world. It is in fact one of the most popular and widely worn tartans in the world. The tartan was worn by 'The Black Watch', a group that patrolled the highlands after the Jacobite rebellion of 1715. The Black Watch was made up of companies from different clans; one from Clan Fraser of Lovat, Clan Munro, Clan Grant and three from Clan Campbell.

The Campbell of Breadalbane tartan is traditionally worn by members of the Breadalbane or Glenorchy branches of Clan Campbell. The earliest the tartan was seen was 1810. This tartan is based on the Clan Campbell Tartan. The colors of the Campbell of Breadalbane tartan are navy blue, green, black and yellow. It features identical colors to Campbell tartan with the addition of yellow stripes. The modern shown here is the primary Breadalbane tartan.
