Degas dancers

Degas was nicknamed the “painter of dancers”. From 1860 onwards, he developed a fascination with dance, which was originally discovered at the Paris Opera, where he spent much time backstage. As a result of his interest, his paintings portrayed the dancers in private behind-the-scenes moments, as well as during their performances on stage. 07 June 1865 - unknown Marie Geneviève van Goethem (or Goetham or Goeuthen) was a French ballet student and dancer with the Paris Opera Ballet, and the model for Edgar Degas's statue Little Dancer of Fourteen Years (La Petite Danseuse de Quatorze Ans). Marie was the daughter of a laundress and a tailor, who came to Paris in the early 1860s from Belgium. She was born in 1865 in the diverse 9th arrondissement of Paris.
