Galapagos penguins are endemic to the Galapagos Islands. | Spheniscus mendiculus | It is the only penguin to live north of the equator in the wild. The Galapagos is the third smallest species of penguin in the world with a weight between 2 to 4 kilograms (4.4 to 8.8 pounds).

Spheniscus mendiculus, Galapagos Penguin. The only penguin in Galápagos. Most inhabit Fernandina Island and the west coast of Isabela Island. The cool waters of the Humboldt and Cromwell Currents allow it to survive despite the tropical latitude. They eat small schooling fish, mainly mullet and sardines, and sometimes crustaceans. Usually stays close to shore, and rests on rocky outcrops, where several may congregate. Unafraid of humans and often swims quite close to snorkeling tourists.
