Guiding light

Back to the Cornwall trip archives... This is from Day 1, we decided to visit the Lizard as the cloud was breaking a little as the morning wore on. As we arrived the view across the sea was pock marked with shafts of sunlight shining down from above. As this is a busy route, we didn't have to wait long for a passing ship, and were luck enough to have the 'divine light' pick it out for us! A slight amount of highlight/dark/shadow processing was applied to bring out the drama in the scene.

Pictures usually freeze only a moment of our lives, but long exposure photography is completely different. Its aim is to highlight the effect of passing time. Since no one can agree on what "long" actually is (a 30-minute picture of a static object might not be distinguishable from a short exposure), the inclusion of motion (mostly through light) is the cornerstone of adding intrigue to these images.
