Kastenbrust armour in Mair's armoured combat manual from around 1550. 16th sword

This kastenbrust cuirass was made as a commission, inspired with Saint Georges statue in Germanisches Nationalmuseum Nurnberg. Breastplate is of welded construction; 2mm, 1,5mm and 1mm C45 and 50HF steels used, heat treated between 38-45HRC.

Effigy of Friedrich von Nippenburg (1435), Schwieberdinger Georgskirche, Germany. The kastenbrust and round visored bascinet were modern at the time. The kastenbrust is suspended with straps probably to a back plate rather than being pointed to the mail. The arm harness is a proto form of the 'lechtes armzeug'. The sabatons, lance rest and gauntlets were modern features. The legs are covered by mail hose and splints on top, not full plate which harks back to the fashions of the 14th century.
