Spheniscus magellanicus, Magellanic Penguin. Fairly common to locally common; often seen in inshore waters and from ferries. Breeds around coasts of southern Chile, Argentina, and in the Falklands; nests in colonies in underground burrows. Adult penguins can regularly dive to depths of between 20 m to 50 m deep in order to forage for prey such as cuttlefish, squid, krill and other crustaceans. They ingest sea water with their prey. Their salt-excreting gland rids the salt from their bodies.

The only penguin in Galápagos. Small with a white belly. Adult has a dark horseshoe on breast and sides, and a white line that starts behind the eye and circles down to the throat; young birds lack these features. When swimming on the surface of the water, it may vaguely resemble a loon or duck. Usually stays close to shore, and rests on rocky outcrops, where several may congregate. Unafraid of humans and often swims quite close to snorkeling tourists.
