Isle of Pines New Caledonia is a 14km by 18km island in named by Captain James Cook in 1774 for the pine trees which cover it.

This photograph shows the "Natural Pool" (Piscine Naturelle) on Ile des Pins. It is a small and shallow lagoon with crystal clear water. The lagoon is the home for several tropical species of fish, corals and shellfish. The lagoon is connected to the pacific ocean but surrounded by rocks.
