The Süleymaniye Mosque (Turkish: Süleymaniye Camii) is a grand mosque in Istanbul, Turkey. It was built on the order of sultan Suleiman I (Suleiman the Magnificent) and was constructed by the great Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan. The Michaelion was one of the earliest and most famous sanctuaries dedicated to Archangel Michael in the Roman Empire. According to tradition, it was built in the 4th century by Emperor Constantine the Great (r. 306-337), just north of Constantinople.
