Red Fir (Californian Fir, Abies magnifica) is native to the mountains of south-west Oregon and California. The name 'red fir' derives from the bark color of old trees. It is a large evergreen tree growing to 40m–60m tall with a 2m trunk diameter and a narrow conic crown. The bark on young trees is smooth and grey becoming orange-red, rough and fissured on old trees. It has blue-green needle-like leaves and erect yellow-green (occasionally purple) cones, ripening to brown.
