Albert Namatjira (Australia): The first famous Aboriginal artist

Portrait of Australian artist Albert Namatjira in Alice Springs, in 1958. Indigenous Australian artist Albert Namatjira (1902–1959) is arguably Australia's best known Aboriginal painter. He is known for watercolours of desert landscapes rather than the symbolic style of traditional Aboriginal art. His paintings also depict Ghost Gums that were to be listed as heritage sites in Alice Springs, but these trees have now been burnt down.

Albert Namatjira (1902-1959), was a Western Arrernte water colour artist. The Hermannsburg School of Indigenous painting he initiated (after the Lutheran mission where his community grew up) remains a distinctive tradition. Albert Namatjira was granted Australian citizenship as the first aboriginal Australian in 1957, at a time when Indigenous Australians were not considered Australian citizens.
