Edward Seymour, Duke of Somerset continued Henry VIII's mission to co-erce Scotland into an political marriage and impose the Anglican Reformation on the Scottish Church. In 1547, he led an army into Scotland supported by a large fleet. At the Battle of Pinkie Cleugh Somerset slaughtered thousands of Scots who were using obsolete weaponry. But the Scots refused to hand over the infant Queen Mary Stuart, and smuggled her to France. The battle resulted in no political advantage to the English.
