Qld nurses protest privatisation plans. About 300 nurses and midwives, armed with high-pitched whistles and catchy slogans, descended on state parliament on Thursday to protest against plans to privatise Queensland's new hospitals.
Allegations of fraud, corruption and harassment at a privately run public hospital in Western Australia were aired at a parliamentary inquiry last month and raise questions of how effectively a profit-driven private company can operate a public hospital.
A parliamentary committee has raised concerns about allegations of fraud and corruption levelled against the hospital's private operator, Health Solutions WA. Health Solutions was forced to repay $1.8 million to the Health Department amid allegations doctors were being paid cash bonuses for admitting patients. The parliamentary committee recommended an independent examination of the matter.
