The Chinese elm (Ulmus parvifolia), or lacebark elm, is an ornamental deciduous tree that is a good species for a beginner to grow as bonsai. This resilient tree grows in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 5 through 9 and can tolerate a variety of soil compositions. Bonsai soils, in particular, are designed to provide aeration and adequate drainage so that the soil remains moist, but is loose enough to allow new root growth.
