Australian Federation Architecture
In 1901, the "Commonwealth of Australia" was proclaimed. A nationalistic building style emerged around the turn of the century, and has become known as the Federation period of architecture (about 1888 to 1918). The Federation house incorporates Queen Anne, Art Nouveau & American Shingle styles; elaborate timberwork; red bricks usually tuckpointed; Marseilles tiled roofs; terracotta ornaments; gables; verandahs; stained-glass leadlight windows and decorative internal & external tilework.
