Daughter of the Empire- If you only read one fantasy series, this is the one I recommend. It is a great look at fantasy Asian culture and the ideas of honor and nobles. Most fantasy novels take place in fantasy Europe, so it is a fresh idea and really changes several well used themes to create a new and interesting realm. The realm also hooks into a fantasy Europe for the ones seeking out traditional fantasies.

Daughter of the Empire: An Epic Saga of the World on the Other Side of the Riftwar (Riftwar Cycle: The Empire Trilogy) / Raymond E. Feist, Janny Wurts

Empire Trilogy III: Mistress Of The Empire by Raymond Feist (1992) | Stalked by a secret & merciless brotherhood of assassins, the brilliant Lady Mara of the Acoma faces the most deadly challenge she has ever known

Thus began my love affair with Janny Wurts. I think she was the first female fantasy writer I ever read and I immediately loved the new dynamic she brought to Feists writing.
