Mount Desert Rock Lighthouse, Maine (1829) One of the most desolate and isolated places ever used for a lighthouse is located 26 miles off shore from the nearest harbor. The rocky islet is only 600 yards long and 200 yards wide, its highest point is only twenty feet above the sea level at low tide. During storms, the entire island is submerged by the waves.
