Toby, the dog, followed the trail and found the following: "Toby finally stopped near an isolated rundown cottage, which appeared from the outside to be unoccupied... We were standing fifty feet away from the [Hartfield] house, behind the toolshed... it had clearly been empty for months" (Scheier, 222-223).
