CHARLESTON STUDIOS was a late 19th c / early 20th c photography business owned & run by Harry Charleston, here, and previously at a location on the cnr Hunter & Newcomen Sts. In 1931 the building was renamed Washington House after the pharmacy businessman Washington Handley Soul, & later it was part of Scott's, & then David Jones. Currently unoccupied, the building will in the next year be redeveloped into apartments.

Northumberland Permanent Building and Investment Land and Loan Society Building was built in 1887, the year of this Snowball photograph, it was the first major commission by the architecural firm Bennet and Yeomans. This elaborate three story high Victorian building became a landmark of the city. However, it was demolished in 1938.
