Gold and Ruby MangaMalai Necklace Tamil Nadu, South India 20th Century A gold mangamali necklace made from single mango pods each inset with a single cabochon ruby. These were made as symbols of fertility and often formed part of the marriage ensemble. The imagery is seen on many Chola bronzes and stone sculptures from all over India.
This is a Hindu marriage ornament ('thali') of excellent quality, showing the goddes of good fortune, Lakshmi, and birds. Tamil Nadu; 19th c. Gold. Bought, many years ago, from Michel Halter. Now a very hard-to-get piece. Shown in "Ethnic Jewellery and Adornment", p. 308.
