The Riverhead Hotel was built at the head of the Waitemata Harbour, near the Rangitopuni River and the Maori canoe portage between the Waitemata and Kaipara Harbours. Timber milling has also had an impact in this area of West Auckland, NZ. The Riverhead State Forest was planted on 5,000 ha of poor gum land from 1929 to 1933. Riverhead jetty. 2014. Today it takes about an hour and 3/4 by ferry boat from Auckland on the high tide. In 1875 a steamer from Auckland took 3 hours to Riverhead where a railway line ran from Harkin's Point to Helensville. When the passengers arrived they found they had to climb a series of ladders to reach the station.
