"Thalassemic Indices" = ELEVATED RBC, low MCV, low Hct, and normal RDW.  If the degree of anemia doesn't quite fit with the microcytosis, think of thalassemia (vs. IDA in which the anemia and microcytosis do fit).  Smear shows occ target cells and BASOPHILIC stippling.
