On this day, 24 March 1827, an engineer named John Busby began work on a scheme to pipe fresh water from the Lachlan swamps to a reservoir in the area now called Hyde Park in Sydney. This pipeline became known as Busby’s Bore. It took 10 years of convict labour to bore through 3.6 km of rock.
