Computer games aren't only for kids! Our stroke research focuses on the recovery of movement after stroke. We are currently setting up a project to test the delivery of rehabilitation therapy via high speed broadband to people in regional and remote parts of Australia. Marc Buchan took part in our Wii therapy program - click here to read his story.
Falls and balance | Neuroscience Research Australia
Falls & balance research. Our balance and falls research focuses on vision, leg sensation, lower limb strength, reaction time and postural stability to understand additional risk factors. We also look at footwear-surface interactions, confusion and dementia, eyewear, hospital settings, fear and risk-taking behaviour. Click on the picture to find out more about our current projects.
Schizophrenia research. Schizophrenia is a mental illness that emerges in adolescence or young adulthood and affects approximately 1 in 100 people in Australia and worldwide. We are currently investigating several new treatments, including transcranial Direct Current Stimulation, a very mild form of electrical stimulation applied to the scalp to stimulate brain activity and improve thinking. Damien McDonell was a participant in the CASSI study. Click on his picture to read his story.
Sleep apnoea | Neuroscience Research Australia
Obstructive sleep apnoea research. We are currently making the first direct biomechanical measurements of the upper airway in humans. By examining how the mechanical properties of these muscles are altered in people with obstructive sleep apnoea and how the brain drives these muscles, we will be able to improve treatments. These MRI images are used to study how the tongue and other muscles keep the airway open during sleep.
Motor neurone disease
Motor neurone disease research. We are trying to improve our understanding of MND using novel electrical and magnetic tests. We also in the process of conducting a drug trial in the hope that it slows the progression of this devastating illness. Sonia Wright has been a participant in our MND research.
Child injury | Neuroscience Research Australia
Child injury research. Road trauma is a leading cause of death and disabling injury for children in Australia. We are studying how these injuries occur, and how changes to the types and design of child car restraints can reduce serious injuries and death.
Autism | Neuroscience Research Australia
Autism research. We are currently investigating the ability of children with autism spectrum disorders to recognise emotions. Our goal is the examine the brain regions underlying these fundamental deficits in emotion recognition and how they diverge from normally developing children. Caidos is a participant in our empathy study. Read his story here
