Issa / Haiku 1823 .籠の鳥蝶をうらやむ目つき哉 ~ kago no tori chô wo urayamu metsuki kana ~ "caged bird-- watching the butterfly with envy" I like this translation found in a wonderful little children's book: "How sadly the bird in his cage/ Watches the butterflies"; Don't Tell the Scarecrow and Other Japanese Poems (New York: Scholastic Books, 1969), unpaginated. However, urayamu connotes envy, not sadness.
