In the 1930s William Ricketts bought a four-acre bush block on Mount Dandenong, Victoria and called it Potter's Sanctuary. Word spread about his extraordinary sculptures that began to adorn the property. He developed a spiritual empathy with the Aboriginal people and strived to preserve his love for the Australian landscape, promoting respect for the Aboriginal culture and land. He lived at the Sanctuary into his nineties and continued to create his sculptures until his death in 1993.
