Last night at bed time Hamish was an emotional mess, which led us to ask "Was he just tired or was it the Diabetes?". In this instance, it was the Diabetes. He was low and needed to eat, with his mood swing being one of the 'by-products' of his low BGL. We talk about the emotional rollercoaster Diabetes takes Hamish on - a ride he has very little control over - in this week's blog https://www.oneand2.com.au/blog/

As Hamish went to the Dawn Service yesterday wearing his Great Grandfather’s war medals it made us think about all Type 1 Diabetics who, on a daily basis, battle a war of their own. Type 1 Diabetes is an unforgiving, frustrating and life threatening condition. With a pancreas that refuses to work there is a huge amount of effort and involvement just to stay alive. You can read more about Hamish's daily battle in our latest blog called 'Our Hero' https://www.oneand2.com.au/blog/

I haven’t written a blog for a while, years in fact. Plenty has been happening but nothing that had really compelled me to put pen to paper, until this week. I was walking in to the kitchen when our T1D son Hamish said to me “Mum, can you please give me my needles?”. It stopped me in my tracks and made me want to cry. Read why... https://www.oneand2.com.au/blog/ #type1 #diabeteswontstopme #oneand2

The meter read ‘HI’– the words Hamish’s Blood Glucose Monitor uses to tell us that his levels are so bad, it can no longer display how high they are. Not a good thing to see. In this week's blog we deal with a recent bout of 'Diabetes rebellion' where Hamish has been avoiding tests and needles when we are not around. https://www.oneand2.com.au/blog/

We've always struggled with how much we should tell Hamish about the gravity of his disease...a life-long, life-threatening illness. The decision was taken out of our hands when he had school speech and chose to do it on Type 1 Diabetes."People with Type 1 Diabetes need insulin to survive.” he read which triggered a realisation we hadn't expected to him to have at 8 yrs old. This week's blog is about how we handle the tougher conversations around T1D https://www.oneand2.com.au/blog/

Last week we had a huge wake-up call with Hamish. After checking his reading at 11am we had made the call that he didn't need testing during the night. A chance wake up by Brad at 3am found Hamish so low that he risked falling unconscious. Had Brad not gotten up, we could have lost him. In this week's blog we talk about our options - getting up every night at 3am or a CGM? https://www.oneand2.com.au/blog/

"242 needles in a jar"... This was the number of needles we delivered to our local chemist today in our monthly ritual of ‘sharps disposal’. It probably was a similar amount last month and will probably be a similar amount next month. You are probably asking “Why don’t you use an insulin pump?”... We discuss needles vs the pump in this week's blog https://www.oneand2.com.au/blog/

Hamish ran the 'Colour Run' on Sunday and proved that even a hypo mid way wasn't going to stop him enjoying the happiest 5kms on the planet!! ‪#‎diabeteswontstopme‬ Watch his video at www.oneand2.com.au/blog

It was a beautiful afternoon so we headed down to the beach. Hamish's BGL was 2.7 upon arrival (boo!), then 5.4 after treatment (yeah!) but 17.3 by the time we got home (boo again!). It’s the pendulum swing of Type 1 Diabetes…In between the lows and highs, he had awesome fun - you can see the video at www.oneand2.com.au/blog/‪#‎diabeteswontstopme‬

Hamish has zero awareness during the night if his BGLs have dropped into dangerous territory. He doesn’t wake up, toss and turn, disturb, come too and feel funny – there is no indication, nothing. The threat of a Diabetic coma feels much more real when there is nothing to pre-empt his decline. Read how we deal with night time BGL testing in our latest blog https://www.oneand2.com.au/blog/
