Lily Karadada (Wandjina) Rain Spirit 2000 Earth pigments/canvas, 100x50cm. Wandjina spirit figures embody the rain spirit & Wunambal people ancestor. From the plateau areas along the North Kimberley coast, & hinterland, painted on cave walls, they're always shown frontal with no mouths, & large blacks eyes & a beak-like nose, with a veil of dots perhaps raindrops. Dreamtime mythology says Wandjina emerged from clouds, & will return that way, other versions say Dumbi, the Owl, is the model.
Arbi Wandjinas by Jack Dale: "Two borther Wandjinas. Thats "Arbi" - Brothers. Wandjina is a big rain god. A spirit. He can make a big flood if he wants. We have to treat the Wandjina the right way. We got to respect him. Then everything will be fine in our country."
