The Norman Conquest - The real transformation of English - which started turning it into the language spoken today - came with the arrival of William the Conqueror from Normandy, in today's France. The French spoken by William and his nobles eventually developed into a separate dialect, Anglo-Norman, which became the language of the medieval elite. It contributed around 10,000 words, many still used today. Some Norman words ousted Old English words, but others lived side by side as synonyms.
