PRUNUS caucasica 'Nana' -- 3-5 ft, rounded. Prefers moist, well-drained, highly organic soil and partial to heavy shade. Tolerant of salt spray. Intolerant of excessive fertilization. Fragrant, white owers on wide axillary racemes in April– May. Purple to black conical drupes form in sum- mer. Lustrous dark green leaves.
Scarlet Firethorn (Pyracantha) - native to Spain and Iran, a favorite of Cedar Waxwings. Blooms white early summer, tolerates shade and drought. A rapid grower, it can grow to a height of 8 feet, zones 5-8. Thorny, not poisonous
Kalmia angustifolia f. rubra Red sheep laurel -- >3 ft, rounded, spreading. Native in rocky barrens to wet soils in semishade sites. Prefers acidic, cool, readily drained soils in full sun. Leaves are medium green to blue green above and light green below. Small cluster of purple or crimson owers develop in mid-June or early July.
