BELONG, LIVE LONGER -- These Okinawan women have been friends for 97 years. They are all over 100. They meet each evening at 5:00, drink sake, gossip and occasionally talk sex. If one doesn't show up, the others don kimonos, shuffle across the village an check up on their missing friend--no need for long-term care insurance! Their committed social network--called a moai--is worth up to 8 extra years of life expectancy compared to a life of isolation.
FRIENDS=LONGEVITY...Lonely peoples' life expectancy is 8 years shorter than people who have at least 5 good friends. The definition of a good friend: You like them, you see them regularly and you can call them on a bad day and they'll care. Share with your friends that keep you young. #BlueZones
GARDEN POWER -- Of the 256 centenarians interviewed, most grew gardens and many were still working their plots. Gardening has been proven to lower cortisol levels but more importantly, provides a daily nudge to water, weed, or tend. This non-exercise physical activity (and organic harvests) kept people fit into their 100's. Here, 105-yr-old Okianwan Teguchi dons his gardening gloves before weeding.
Plant Slant Beans, including fava, black, soy and lentils, are the cornerstone of most centenarian diets. Meat—mostly pork—is eaten on average only five times per month. Serving sizes are 3-4 oz., about the size of deck or cards.
